Onōmilu

Onōmilu is dedicated to restoring, revitalizing, and preserving Nomilu Fishpond, the surrounding caldera perimeter, and the adjoining stream and beach parcel—collectively known as the Nomilu Parcel. Viewed as a modern-day mini ahupua‘a, the Nomilu Parcel serves as a living laboratory of stewardship, where land and sea provide food, shelter, and refuge, and where nurturing and harvesting are celebrated as interconnected practices.

Onōmilu seeks to be a leader in words and deeds, championing the Hawaiian fishpond community and advancing the revitalization of fishponds as vital food sources. By integrating historic traditions and wisdom with modern scientific practices, the Foundation supports aquaculture in Nomilu Fishpond, ocean-based food production, and agriculture on the caldera perimeter and Nomilu Beach.

Onōmilu also promotes the propagation of plants central to traditional and modern hula and Hawaiian festivals, collaborating with non-profit organizations, government agencies, and commercial partners to preserve and expand native Hawaiian plant life.

In keeping with cultural values and scientific best practices, the Foundation works to safeguard Nomilu as a refuge for sea turtles, Hawaiian monk seals, and other native species. Ecotourism and agricultural activities will be developed and managed to ensure these resources remain protected.

Finally, Onōmilu seeks to integrate all aspects of the Nomilu Parcel into a cultural classroom and scientific laboratory. Through place-based learning programs, students and community members can explore Hawaiian traditions and knowledge while engaging with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education. These programs support cultural practice, conservation, and workforce development in marine science, agriculture, environmental science, and cultural preservation.
